Person dies after being hit by train in Old Lyme

Old Lyme — One person died Monday morning after being hit by a train near the Buttonball Road train bridge, according to state police.

Mike Tolbert, a spokesman with Amtrak, said Train 2190, an express from New York to Boston, "made contact with a trespasser on the tracks" Monday morning.

The incident occurred about four miles east of Old Saybrook Station, he said.

Police are withholding the victim's name until the state medical examiner has confirmed his or her identity and the person's next of kin has been notified.

Tolbert said no injuries to the train's crew or its 246 passengers were reported.

Train 2190 was scheduled to arrive in New London at 8:37 a.m., but was held up in Old Lyme until about 10 a.m. The incident occurred just after 8:30 a.m.

Amtrak officials said service was disrupted in both directions for almost two hours as police investigated.

Police said they don't suspect a criminal aspect to the case.
