Old Lyme man accused of pushing child into lake in 2015

An Old Lyme man is facing two charges after he allegedly ran after and pushed a 14-year-old into the water at Rogers Lake last summer, according to state police.

Peter J. Lodi, 49, of 228 Shore Road, Old Lyme, was charged March 23 with risk of injury to a child and breach of peace.

According to an arrest warrant application written by Trooper Dean Griffin of Troop F in Westbrook, Griffin was assigned to the case in January because "it was believed it was not originally investigated properly."

According to the affidavit, Old Lyme police Officer Sal Milardo responded to the scene on July 13, 2015, after two callers reported the altercation.

Milardo interviewed several people before "leaving and taking no action," Griffin wrote.

One of the callers, a lifeguard at the lake, told Milardo on Jan. 29 that she had seen Lodi drive up on a moped, run to the end of the dock and begin to yell obscenities at both the 14-year-old and one of his sons before she called police last summer.

She said she watched Lodi grab his son's right arm and then push the 14-year-old into the lake, according to the affidavit.

The lifeguard also told Griffin that Lodi pushed the 14-year-old child's head underwater when the child swam up to the dock.

In his Feb. 21 interview with Griffin, the 14-year-old gave a similar story, explaining that Lodi had been swearing at him and his friends for swearing before grabbing him by the throat and pushing him into the water, according to the affidavit.

Lodi told Griffin on Feb. 29 that he came to Rogers Lake that day because his wife had called and told him the 14-year-old was pushing other kids into the lake.

Lodi said in his statement that he told the child "I'm having a problem with you," and then chest-bumped him into the lake, according to the affidavit.

Police said Lodi turned himself in at Troop F on March 23.

He was released from custody after posting a $1,500 nonsurety bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court May 4.
