Ledyard — A six-hour standoff between police and a man who had barricaded himself in his home ended peacefully just before 10 p.m. Saturday, according to town police.

The man, who had been in contact with police throughout the incident, had threatened to attempt "suicide-by-cop," but ultimately left the house on Stonybrook Road and surrendered, according to Ledyard police Lt. Kenneth R. Creutz.

Charges against the man, who was not immediately identified, were expected late Saturday night, Creutz said.

Police were called to the house around 3:30 p.m. by a woman who had escaped after being unlawfully restrained, Creutz said. Police found her several miles down the road and learned from her that the man was unstable and suicidal, Creutz said.

A negotiator from the state police was called to the scene.

Local and state police closed off Stonybrook Road, which is off Route 12. Police could be seen on Stonybrook and Northglenwoods roads, some of them carrying rifles.

The victim suffered minor bruising, and no one else in the incident was injured, Creutz said.

A woman who lives on Northglenwoods said she returned home to find police in the neighborhood. The police told her that she could go to her home but should stay inside. The woman declined to give her name.

In addition to Ledyard police, state police patrol and emergency services personnel were at the scene, along with Montville police and a Norwich police sergeant who had had prior dealings with the suspect, Creutz said. The Ledyard and Gales Ferry fire departments and Ledyard Ambulance also were at the scene.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story included photographs of police outside a home in the same neighborhood as the standoff. The photos did not show the home involved in the incident.
