Stonington Police charge StoneRidge employee with disabling smoke detector
Mystic — Stonington police charged a employee of the StoneRidge retirement community with breach of peace Friday afternoon after they say he disabled a smoke detector in the dining room so it would not be set off by cooking.
Joel Maikranz, 31, of 14 Kamaha St., Groton, was released on a promise to appear in New London Superior Court on May 9.
According to police, they were alerted to the problem by Old Mystic Fire Department Lt. Kevin Czapala who had been informed that a fire alarm was being tampered with to accommodate cooking. Police said Maikranz was charged because of the hazard he had created for the facility by disabling the smoke detector.
