New London fire officials respond to two overdoses, fire overnight

New London — It was a busy Monday night and early Tuesday morning in the city as fire officials responded to two suspected overdoses and an apartment fire within eight hours, according to Battalion Chief Tom Curcio.

Of the two overdose calls, one ended up being a suspected PCP overdose on Hebron Street that came in around 7 p.m., and the other was a suspected heroin overdose closer to 2:15 a.m. on Pratt Street.

Curcio said both of the affected people were men in their mid-30s. He said Narcan was used on the heroin overdose victim, who was barely breathing but was successfully revived.

When the fire call came in around 11:30 p.m., Curcio said, fire officials were told the male occupant of the affected apartment — one of four apartments at 7 Prest St. — may be trapped in his home.

When they arrived, though, the man had escaped the apartment without injury, Curcio said. He said firefighters searched the building to be sure no occupants remained and were able to extinguish the main body of the fire within 15 minutes.

Curcio said the American Red Cross helped relocate the man while fire officials continue to investigate. Because firefighters ventilated the building, he said, none of the other three apartments was affected.

Emergency responders from the submarine base, Groton and Waterford helped cover calls while New London firefighters were working at Prest Street, Curcio said.
