Waterford police to conduct sobriety checkpoints through Memorial Day weekend
Waterford — Police on Tuesday said they'll be conducting sobriety checkpoints around town beginning Friday and continuing through Memorial Day weekend.
The checkpoints are part of the state Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration's holiday crackdown initiative.
State police also will be running checkpoints and ramping up enforcement on moving violations, seatbelt use and illegal cellphone use throughout the state, according to a news release.
During Memorial Day weekend last year, state police arrested 57 drunken drivers and charged 1,254 motorists with speeding, 1,454 with seat belt violations and 4,548 with hazardous moving violations.
