Norwich man arrested after struggle with police officer
Norwich – A local man was arrested early Monday for assaulting a police officer during a foot chase near the city police station, police said.
Joseph Nessing, 25, of 123 W. Thames St. was charged at 3:30 a.m. Monday with taking a motor vehicle without permission and assault on a police officer. He was released on a $500 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court Aug. 14.
Officer Peter Karasuk said Monday he and officer James Watts responded to the call that Nessing had taken a vehicle from an acquaintance without permission. The vehicle was found on Stetson Street, which intersects with West Thames Street just south of the police station.
Karasuk said Nessing attempted to flee and the officers pursued on foot. Karasuk said he tackled Nessing and during the struggle his left arm was on a chain link fence, causing an injury to his forearm near the elbow.
