Norwich man charged with fraudulently collecting unemployment compensation
A Norwich man was charged Tuesday with using another person's name and Social Security number to illegally collect more than $4,000 in unemployment benefits.
Carl Dean, 45, of 274 Broad St., Apt. 2, was arrested by inspectors from the Unemployment Compensation Fraud Unit in the Office of the Chief State's Attorney and charged with one count each of first-degree larceny by defrauding a public community, unemployment compensation fraud and third-degree identify theft.
The arrest is the result of an investigation into a complaint from the Connecticut Department of Labor.
The state alleges Dean fraudulently collected $4,065 in unemployment benefits from December 2014 through March 2016 by using the name and Social Security number of a Hartford man.
Dean was released on a $10,000 nonsurety bond and is scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court on Aug. 4.
The case is being prosecuted by the Unemployment Compensation Fraud Unit, which was established under a partnership between the state Division of Criminal Justice and the state Department of Labor to investigate and prosecute fraud in the unemployment compensation program. It is financed with funds provided by the U.S. Department of Labor.
The New London Police Department assisted in the investigation.
