Police charge Niantic woman with leaving child in car

East Lyme — Police charged a 35-year-old Niantic woman Saturday with leaving her child in the car by the Stop & Shop on Flanders Road.

East Lyme police said they responded at 4:22 p.m. on Saturday to a report of a child locked in a car.

When they arrived, they saw that passers-by had opened the car to check on the 4-year-old child and the child's mother had left the store, according to the police report.

Sarah Elizabeth Koster of 127 Black Point Road was charged with leaving a child, under 12, unsupervised in a public place or motor vehicle.

Police said they based the charge on the statements of witnesses.

The child was not injured, according to the report.
