Police: New London pair discharged rifle in residential neighborhood
New London — Police Wednesday night arrested two local residents after they allegedly fired a rifle from the rear porch of their Hamilton Street home.
Robert Sanchez, 22, and Rachel Whittinghill, 18, both of 1 Hamilton St., were charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, second-degree reckless endangerment and breach of peace.
According to police, officers went to the residence around 9:45 p.m. after someone reported shots had been fired there.
Police said they learned upon further investigation that Sanchez and Whittinghill each had discharged a .22-caliber rifle and pellet gun in the residential neighborhood.
Police said they found and seized a Ruger .22-caliber rifle that had been refashioned and restocked to resemble an M-16 military-style rifle.
The shots caused minor damage to a barn-type structure behind the home, but didn't injure anyone, according to police.
Police released Sanchez to the custody of the U.S. Navy after he posted a $100,000 nonsurety bond.
Whittinghill was held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
