Two New London residents facing drug charges after police searches

New London — Police arrested two city residents Thursday morning under separate search warrants after they said they found cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia in a Hope Street apartment and a loaded handgun and narcotics in a house on Mountain Avenue.
New London police narcotics officers and members of the state police Statewide Narcotics Task Force searched an apartment at 18 Hope St. Thursday morning and said they found cocaine, 27 grams of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and $640 in cash.
They arrested Jermaine Smith, 32, who lives in the apartment, and charged him with operating a drug factory, possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of cocaine with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell.
Smith is being held on a $200,000 bond.
New London and state police officers then served a separate search and seizure warrant at 71 Mountain Ave., where they said they found a loaded .380 caliber handgun and an unspecified amount of narcotic drugs.
They arrested Juan Gonzalez, 41, and charged him with possession and sale of narcotics, sale of narcotics within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of ammunition.
Gonzales is a convicted felon and not legally allowed to own a firearm, according to New London police Capt. Brian M. Wright.
He is being held on a $225,000 bond.
