State police: Tractor-trailer struck 6 vehicles in East Lyme I-95 crash
East Lyme — Interstate 95 south was closed for about four hours Monday night after a tractor-trailer crashed into a car that had slowed for congestion, causing a chain reaction, according to state police.
Police said Gurjit Singh, 39, of Queens Village, N.Y., was driving a California-registered 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer south on I-95 when he ran into the rear of a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta.
That happened near the Exit 73 on-ramp about 8:39 p.m., police said.
According to police, Singh's truck then collided with the center traffic barrier and continued for 400 feet. It struck five other slowed vehicles — including another tractor-trailer — along the way, police said.
Police said the Volkswagen traveled 300 feet as a result of the impact, hitting two other vehicles and sustaining "major disabling damage to all areas."
In addition to the Volvo tractor-trailer and the Volkswagen, crews towed two other vehicles from the scene.
Three drivers, including those of the Volvo and the Volkswagen, were taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital with suspected minor injuries.
Police didn't specify why Singh failed to slow down. No one was charged in the crash.
Crews reopened the interstate about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
