Police identify driver, pedestrians in New London accident Friday
New London — Police have identified the three people involved in a motor vehicle accident Friday in which two pedestrians were struck and three people were taken to the hospital.
David Porter, 62, of 571 Ocean Ave., New London, was identified as the driver of a vehicle traveling on Eugene O'Neill Drive when police said he struck two pedestrians near the Trolley Information Center. One of the men was pinned under Porter’s car. The other man was knocked down.
The pedestrians, who were sitting at granite slabs in front of the kiosk when they were struck, were identified by police Saturday as Brian Roy, 54, of 29 Golden St., Apt. 6, New London, and Kenneth Laffey, 66, of 8 Pearl St., Mystic. It is unclear which man was pinned under the car.
The accident occurred at 5:47 p.m. Firefighters were able to free one of the men whose lower body was pinned under the car and against the kiosk. Police reported he was conscious and alert as they worked to dislodge him. One witness said Porter’s vehicle was making a left turn onto Golden Street when it swerved toward the kiosk.
All three were taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment. Porter and Roy had been discharged from the hospital, and Laffey was listed in fair condition Saturday evening, according to a hospital spokesman.
Police said the investigation is ongoing. They've asked anyone with information about the accident to call the New London Department Detective Bureau at (860) 447-1481.
