Ledyard man arrested in domestic incident
Groton — A Ledyard man was arrested Thursday in connection with a domestic incident, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Zachary Smart, 25, of 1538 Route 12, Gales Ferry, was charged with second-degree strangulation, threatening, third-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief and disorderly conduct in the April 1 incident, the affidavit said.
The victim, a 26-year-old woman who lives in Groton City with her two young children, told police that Smart became angry at her because he wanted her password to her computer, the affidavit said.
The woman said Smart accused her of speaking to an ex-boyfriend and other men, the affidavit said. The woman told police that she and Smart wrestled for her cellphone, which contained the password, and Smart grabbed her by the neck and choked her and threw her on the bed, the affidavit said.
The woman said she tried to run but was thrown back onto the bed, and she screamed hoping neighbors would hear her, the affidavit said. When she tried to reach the cellphone again, the victim told police Smart bit her arm, and later smashed the screen of the phone.
At one point, the victim said Smart threatened to kill her and her children if he saw police, the affidavit said.
