Stonington — Police charged a local woman with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs Tuesday afternoon after they say she struck another car from behind while driving east on Route 1 near Montauk Avenue.

Paula W. Vinhateiro, 46, of 19 Fairview Drive also was charged with failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, traveling unreasonably fast and driving without minimum insurance.

The driver of the other car was injured and taken to The Westerly Hospital after the 3:24 p.m. crash. Vinhateiro later was released on a nonsurety bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Nov. 18.
