Groton Town police charge man in assault of woman at hotel
Groton — Town police have arrested a 35-year-old man on charges he assaulted and caused serious injury to a woman who had an active protective order in place against him.
The alleged assault, which occurred sometime in October, was reported on Thursday. Police obtained a warrant and on Friday arrested Joseph M. Fitzgerald, 35, of no certain address, in New London.
Fitzgerald is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, four counts of violation of a protective order and two counts breach of peace.
Police said Fitzgerald assaulted a female victim at a Groton hotel, causing serious physical injuries, including a deep laceration to the victim’s arm caused by a sharp instrument.
Held in lieu of a $100,000 bond, Fitzgerald was presented in New London Superior Court on Friday morning.
