    UPDATED: Ledyard man, 66, injured after SUV strikes him on Route 12

    Ledyard — A pedestrian was struck by a sport utility vehicle Friday evening on Route 12 in the area of Kings Highway in Gales Ferry, Ledyard Police Sgt. Craig Getter said Saturday.

    The pedestrian, Robert Wraight, 66, of Meadow Drive, Ledyard, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, then transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital, according to a news release issued Saturday night.

    The driver, Sarah M. Bernier of West Drive, Ledyard, was not injured, according to the release. Bernier said she did not see Wraight until the last moment and tried to swerve, but could not avoid hitting him, the release said. She has not been charged, Getter said.

    The vehicle was traveling northbound and Wraight was walking southbound in the northbound breakdown lane when the accident occurred at 6:06 p.m. Friday, Getter said. The incident is under investigation.
