Ledyard resident charged with misusing GoFundMe donations

Ledyard — A monthslong investigation ended in an arrest Tuesday after police said they found a resident had used donations for personal use.

Bonni Ojeda, 34, of 1080 Long Cove Road, Gales Ferry, was charged with five counts of sixth-degree larceny.

Ojeda set up a GoFundMe.com donation page after the accidental death of a 4-year-old who drowned in a pool at a Ledyard residence in August. The account, set up to raise money for funeral expenses for the family, collected thousands of dollars in donations. Police say Ojeda removed several thousands from the account for personal use and forwarded the rest to the family.

Ojeda was released on a $3,000 surety bond and will appear at New London Superior Court on Jan. 19.
