New London — Police on Tuesday charged the woman who careened off South Frontage Road and into five parked cars Tuesday evening with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Giana Velez, 23, of 537 Bank St., Apt. 4, additionally was charged with child endangerment while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.

According to police, officers and fire officials responded to the Texas Roadhouse lot at 322 S. Frontage Road at 6:49 p.m. after several callers said a car had rolled over and possibly was on fire.

Officers learned upon arrival that Velez had been driving north on Interstate 95 northbound and entered South Frontage Road via Exit 82A. Police said Velez then lost control of her vehicle and entered the New London Shopping Center lot “at a high rate of speed.”

Witnesses said the vehicle flipped several times and caught fire. Along the way, Velez’s vehicle hit five other cars that were parked and unoccupied, police said. The collision disabled all of the parked vehicles. Velez's vehicle came to rest on its side.

Police said no one, including Velez’s passengers — a female adult and a 3-year-old child — was injured. Velez was released after posting bond.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact them at (860) 447-5269 or submit anonymous information via the New London Tips 411 system.
