Garage, vehicles a total loss in East Lyme blaze

East Lyme — Firefighters from several departments fought strong winds Tuesday morning as they battled a blaze at 106 Black Point Road.

According to East Lyme Fire Marshal Richard Morris, the blaze, which began about 7:30 a.m., engulfed a two-car garage that had two vehicles inside. Flames from the fire spread to a 40-foot mobile home on the exterior of the garage as well as a private vehicle on the side of that, he said.

There also was “minor extension” to another nearby two-car garage, which had apartment space overhead.

The tenants in the apartments got out safely, Morris said, and no firefighters were injured. The garage, the mobile home and three cars, including a 1955 Cadillac Fleetwood, were a total loss, Morris said.

He said he believes the fire was electrical in nature.

Photos of the fire show bright flames shooting high into the sky.

“Wind was a huge factor today,” Morris said. “It was a substantial fire that was knocked down pretty quickly by large fire lines and a great effort.”

Morris said crews from the Niantic, Flanders and Old Saybrook fire departments responded.
