Serial casino fraudster rearrested day he's released from Corrigan
Montville — State police on Tuesday arrested a New York man for being a fugitive from justice in Pennsylvania shortly after he bonded out of Corrigan Correctional Institution, where he was being held on charges lodged by Mohegan tribal police.
Records show Mohegan tribal police on Dec. 30 charged Jose Manuel Beato, 38, of the Bronx with third-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny in relation to an Oct. 31 incident.
At the time, Beato also was facing charges of cheating at gambling and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny brought by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Police Department. On Jan. 10, Beato was convicted of those charges and sentenced to four years in jail, execution suspended after 90 days followed by three years of probation. Because he had been in custody since Nov. 10 in relation to the case, his jail sentence ended Feb. 7. However, he remained in custody on the pending Mohegan tribal police charges.
On Tuesday, Beato was released from custody on a $5,000 surety bond set in the Mohegan case.
According to state police, officials notified troopers when Beato was being bonded out that there was a warrant for his arrest out of Pennsylvania.
Shortly after he was released from Corrigan, state police took Beato into custody on the fugitive from justice charge. He now is back in custody at Corrigan on a $50,000 bond and is next due in Norwich Superior Court on March 8.
Records show Beato has a lengthy criminal record with convictions in multiple states. Many of those convictions are theft-related.
According to lehighvalleylive.com, Beato last year was one of four men charged with scheming to steal more than $13,000 from Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem.
Lehighvalleylive.com reported that Beato’s alleged accomplices would remove gray colored chips from tables where they were valued at $1. They would give those chips to Beato, who allegedly would find tables where gray chips were worth $25, add the illegally obtained gray chips to his pile after buying in and proceed to gamble.
The suspects allegedly played about 560 $1 chips as $25 chips in four visits to the casino.
Records show Beato posted a $10,000 bond in that case but is going to be forced to forfeit it because did not show up to his court dates. The warrant for his arrest stemmed from the Pennsylvania case.
