New London man sentenced for dealing heroin while serving for previous drug charge

A New London man was sentenced in Hartford on Wednesday to 43 months in prison for distributing heroin while out on day passes from a halfway house.

Robert Cabanban Jr., 27, pleaded guilty in January to one count of conspiracy to possess heroin with intent to distribute.

According to a release from the U.S. Attorney District of Connecticut, in July 2013, Cabanban had been sentenced in Bridgeport federal court to 48 months in prison for selling heroin in his New London apartment. Investigators also seized a loaded .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol during the search.

In June 2016, the Groton Town Police Department received information that Cabanban was selling heroin while out on day passes from a halfway house in Hartford. He had been transfered to the halfway house to complete his previous sentence, which was slated to end in September 2016. Investigators arranged a controlled purchase of 500 bags of heroin from Cabanban, who was arrested at a Groton motel when he arrived to complete the purchase.

Cabanban's criminal history also includes third-degree burglary and state felony convictions for possession of narcotics with intent to sell.
