Police arrest convicted sex offender at Groton City hotel

Groton — City police on Wednesday arrested a convicted sex offender who was listed as a fugitive on the Rhode Island Most Wanted website.

Police said they received a tip that 33-year-old Theodore “TJ” Stephenson, of no certain address, had multiple warrants out for his arrest and was staying at a city hotel.

With the help of the Regional Community Enhancement Task Force, police conducted surveillance and positively identified Stephenson. They took him into custody and charged him with being a fugitive from justice.

According to www.rimostwanted.org, a site maintained by current and former law enforcement officials, the Westerly Police Department obtained a warrant for Stephenson’s arrest after he allegedly failed to register his address with them.

City police said Stephenson has been convicted of crimes including child molestation and sexual assault. Held on a $50,000 bond, he was due in court Thursday.

Police urged residents who see something suspicious or otherwise have information about criminal activity to call them at (860) 446-4186.
