Norwich police arrest man for allegedly plotting to rob Dime Bank

Norwich — Police arrested a man Saturday who they say was sitting a parked vehicle outside the Dime Bank branch on West Town Street in Norwich wearing several layers of clothing and armed with knives.

A caller reported that Maximilian Beres, of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., was acting suspiciously about 11:50 a.m., police said.

Officers found Beres, 30, parked in a secluded location near the bank and wearing several layers of clothing, they said. He was armed with two knives.

Police determined that Beres was plotting to rob the Dime Bank branch shortly before it closed. He was arrested May 18 for allegedly robbing a bank in Smithtown, N.Y.

Police charged Beres with criminal attempt at first-degree robbery, criminal attempt at sixth-degree larceny, carrying a dangerous weapon and illegal possession of a motor vehicle marker plate.

He is being held in lieu of a $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
