New London — A man stabbed during an altercation on Prest Street early Thursday remains in guarded but serious condition at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, police said.

Police have not yet identified the man who was found in a cab outside L+M Hospital about 2:34 a.m. on Thursday. Emergency services personnel initially had been called out to Prest Street for reports of a drug overdose and obtained information at the scene that the victim was in a cab on his way to the hospital.

The victim, as it turned out, was suffering from apparent stab wounds to his torso. Police also found out that the victim had sustained his injuries at 44 Prest St. following a physical confrontation with another man. The suspect had fled the scene after the stabbing.

Police said they collected evidence and interviewed witnesses at the scene.
