Oakdale woman dies following New Year's Day crash in Groton

Groton — One of the two drivers involved in a noontime crash on New Year’s Day has died in the hospital, according to town police.

Police said the crash happened at 12:04 p.m. in the intersection of state Route 184 and Flanders Road.

Police identified the deceased driver as Jean Shutsky, 88, of Oakdale. Also involved was Marilyn Comrie, a 66-year-old Groton resident. Comrie, who sustained serious injuries in the crash, remains hospitalized at Yale New Haven Hospital, police said.

According to police, Shutsky was driving a 2007 Nissan Versa east on Route 184 while Comrie was driving her 1999 Honda Fit north on Flanders Road. Police said the two cars collided in the intersection of the two roads.

    Neither car was carrying passengers.

Police closed Route 184 for about 3½ hours Monday so officers could investigate.

Members of the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit, which includes officers from the Ledyard, Groton and Stonington police departments, are handling the investigation. They haven’t yet determined the cause of the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Groton Town police at (860) 441-6712.
