East Lyme — Firefighters were called out to a house fire on Oak Hill Drive on Saturday night.

Firetrucks and other emergency vehicles lined the road on the tiny cul-de-sac as firefighters streamed in and out of the two-story residence at 18 Oak Hill Drive. Hoses lay strewn across the yard and down the street, the water turning to ice as it ran down the asphalt.

Some nearby residents braved the cold to watch the firefighters work. One of them, Paul Swetland, said a couple and two children live in the house. He said they'd made it out safely and were sheltering in a house across the street.

The fire appeared to be out by 9:55 p.m. Firefighters were ventilating smoke out of the side of the house using fans while others later could be seen checking rooms on the second floor by flashlight.

Trucks from the Niantic, Old Saybrook and Flanders fire departments and East Lyme police were on scene, as well as local emergency medical crews.

    No further information was available.
