Police: Niantic man charged with DUI after hitting cruiser on I-95

Police say a Niantic man driving under the influence of alcohol hit a state police cruiser that was parked on the shoulder of I-95 on Friday.

Douglas Alqueza, 28, told police he had consumed three beers a few minutes before he drove through a set of flares a trooper had arranged around a broken-down vehicle on the left side of I-95 northbound in Old Lyme.

The cruiser was parked on the side of the highway while the trooper was helping a tow truck driver load the car onto a truck when Alqueza drove a Chevy Cavalier into the back of the cruiser just after 8 p.m., according to a state police report of the incident.

No one was injured in the crash. Alqueza, who lives at 26 Attawan Road in Niantic, failed a sobriety test at the scene and was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to drive in the proper lane. He was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear Aug. 23 in New London Superior Court.
