New London — A fast-moving storm brought heavy rain to parts of the region Saturday evening, taking out power to scattered customers in several towns and leaving at least one burned-out car.

In New London, wires brought down by the storm landed on a car in front of 150 Hempstead St. about 8:20 p.m., fire Battalion Chief Keith Nichols said. When firefighters arrived, sparks were coming out of the wire and the car was smoking.

"We couldn't put the fire out until the power was shut off, so it burned for some time," he said.

Eversource was called to the scene and confirmed the power had been cut off about 9:12 p.m. By that time, the car was a total loss, Nichols said. Luckily, no people were involved and there was nothing close by to burn, so the fire was contained to the vehicle, he added.

More than 800 customers were without power in the city about 9 p.m., according to Eversource's outage map. A customer service representative at the utility said crews were on scene working to restore electric service. The number of outages had dropped to 80 by 10:40 p.m.

There were scattered outages elsewhere across the region. East Lyme had the most, with 324 without power shortly before 8 p.m. There were also a few outages in Lyme, Montville, Waterford, Groton and Stonington, the map showed.
