Early morning bathroom fire in Mystic displaces five

Mystic — The American Red Cross is helping five people who were displaced by a fire on Sharon Road early Thursday morning, but Mystic Fire Deputy Chief Anthony Manfredi said that while the residents left for the night, the fire was "very minor" and the electric is back on.

"They've got some cleanup to do, but I'm sure they'll be back there sometime this week," he said Thursday afternoon.

Manfredi said there was a reported structure fire in a single-family home on Sharon Road at 3:33 a.m. Thursday, and responding units were able to put it out with about 10 gallons of water.

He said first responders found a fire in the bathroom on the second floor, and that it was unintentionally caused by a match being placed in a garbage can.

The fire was contained to the bathroom but resulted in "significant water damage" throughout the house, Manfredi said.

Other assisting fire departments included Old Mystic, Poquonnock Bridge, Submarine Base, Ledyard and Noank.
