Pedro to sport a Red Sox hat

Cooperstown, N.Y. - Pedro Martinez's Hall of Fame plaque will have the cap of the Boston Red Sox and John Smoltz's will have the Atlanta Braves.

The Hall of Fame made the announcement Thursday. It said last week that Randy Johnson's plaque will have the cap of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Martinez won two of his three Cy Young Awards with the Red Sox and pitched seven scoreless innings to win the third game of the 2004 World Series sweep of St. Louis - Boston's first title since 1918.

"I cannot be any prouder to take Red Sox Nation to the Hall of Fame with the logo on my plaque," Martinez said in a statement released by the Hall. "I am extremely proud to represent Boston and all of New England with my Hall of Fame career."

Smoltz was the only player on all of Atlanta's record-setting 14 consecutive playoff teams from 1991-04.

Craig Biggio, the other player to be inducted on July 26, did not present an issue: He spent his entire 20-year major league career with the Houston Astros.

"The museum staff works with each inductee by suggesting an appropriate logo option, or no logo at all," Hall President Jeff Idelson said. "For those whose most compelling contributions clearly took place with one team, a logo makes sense.

"For those whose careers were built significantly among multiple teams, not having a team logo is equally acceptable."
