Black Wolves fall to Edmonton for second straight loss

Joel White of the New England Black Wolves, left, fights for position with Edmonton's Jeremy Thompson during Friday night's National Lacrosse League matchup in Edmonton. Edmonton won 18-9.

Edmonton — The Edmonton Rush scored the first four goals and went on to hand the New England Black Wolves their second straight defeat Friday night, beating the Black Wolves 18-9 before 5,257 fans at Rexall Place. It was the first road game for the Black Wolves (2-2), playing their first season in the National Lacrosse League.

New England scored four times in the second period, two by Pat Saunders, trailing 8-4 at halftime, and drew within 12-9 at the end of three quarters on a goal by Brett Manney, assisted by goalie Evan Kirk. But Edmonton outscored the Black Wolves 6-0 in the fourth quarter, getting three goals in that span from Zack Greer.

Greer and Ben McIntosh scored four goals each for Edmonton (2-2), which started the season 0-2 before rebounding with back-to-back victories. The Rush tied their franchise record for most goals in a game with the 18.

Saunders and Kevin Crowley scored two goals each for the Black Wolves, while Matt Crough and Kyle Buchanan had three assists apiece. It was the second straight lopsided loss for the Black Wolves, who lost their last game 19-13 to the Minnesota Swarm.

New England will be back in action at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, returning home for a game against the NLL defending champion Rochester Knighthawks at Mohegan Sun Arena.
