UConn's Collier chosen to play in WNBA All-Star Game

Minnesota Lynx rookie forward Napheesa Collier from UConn was chosen by WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to replace injured Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson at this Saturday’s WNBA All-Star Game.

The game will be played at the Mandalay Bay Events Center at 3:30 p.m. (Ch. 8).

Collier was taken sixth overall in April’s draft. She’s helped Minnesota to a winning record despite missing four of its five starters from the past four seasons — Seimone Augustus (injury), Rebekkah Brunson (injury), Maya Moore (sabbatical) and Lindsay Whalen (retired). That foursome also helped the Lynx win all four of its WNBA titles, tying it with the now-defunct Houston Comets for the most in league history.

Collier is third in scoring (11 ppg), second in rebounds (5.9) and first in steals (1.9) for the Lynx.

Wilson will be unable to play Saturday after spraining her left ankle during last Friday’s 69-66 loss at the Seattle Storm. Wilson was wearing a walking boot and on crutches during Sunday’s home win over Minnesota (79-74). Aces head coach Bill Laimbeer told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that Wilson will be out a few weeks.

Elena Delle Donne and Wilson will be team captains for the All-Star Game after receiving the most fan votes. The two will choose their players from a pool of players voted as starters and reserves during Tuesday night’s WNBA All-Star Team Selection Special (ESPN2, 9:30 p.m.).
