Patriots Step Up to the Plate

 March 6, 2010

This off-season has seen the Patriots in desperate need of fighting off a certain stigma.  When Randy Moss flatly stated, "the Patriots don’t really pay," it added more fire to the already heated Vince Wilfork contract talks.  Robert Kraft fired back with an oh-so clever, "how much did Randy make last year," zinger.  Well now, it can all be put to rest, thanks to Big Vince’s new 5-year $40 million deal.
The contract also carries $25 million guaranteed, including an $18 million dollar signing bonus.  I thought it would take a 5-year $50 million, with half that guaranteed to get the deal done, but obviously Vince just wanted the guaranteed money, not necessarily the entire package.  And even if with the possibility of a lock-out looming next year, this contract shows that the ownership, front office, and coaching staff fully believe Vince is the centerpiece of the defense.  A defense that at times appeared shaky and lacking depth last year.
But it’s not just Vince’s deal that shows how the team’s economic strategy is evolving.  They also re-inked Tully Banta-Cain to a three-year deal worth upwards of $19 million (if he hits incentive targets).  For a team looking to pressure the quarterback, they decided a capable veteran who knows their system and can play within his role, is much more valuable then, say a Julius Peppers type.  Of course, they did offer Peppers a contract, but many feel that was just to drive up the price on Chicago.  They also kept Stephen Neal around for two more years with a low-level deal.  Neal has always been a fan favorite due to his lack of college experience (he came to the Pats after an extremely successful college wrestling career) and evolution as a pro player.
What questions are still left after the initial free agency blast?  Will Kevin Faulk be back?  How will they bolster the secondary?  After cutting Chris Baker and letting Ben Watson walk, where will they find some tight ends?  When will Adalius Thomas be let go?  Or will they keep the disgruntled linebacker around?  Stay tuned as what could be the strangest off-season in NFL history continues to unfold.

Questions Still Linger

A win over Carolina has done little to relieve the uneasiness of Patriot fans.  While aspects of yesterday’s game showed flashes of potential, most of the game caused fans to continue to shake their heads in disgust. ...

Yes, That Really Just Happened

 November 16, 2009

The New England Patriots should've won that game. And when I say Patriots, I am referring to the 45 men who pulled on their jerseys and played their hearts out against a gutsy Colts team. It was their coach who lost them the game. Coach...

American Football Heads Across the Pond

As the Patriots arrive in London to prepare for Sunday's showdown with Tampa Bay, I still wonder what is the NFL thinking? I know the logical answer: expanding the game overseas, increasing revenue streams, in short, evolving. Sports...

One for the Record Books

 October 19, 2009

In football, poor weather should be the great equalizer.  It should slow down a fast defense, limit options on offense, and make field goals a nightmare.  On a slick and sloppy track, one would’ve expected Chris Johnson...

A Win is a Win, and a Loss is a Loss

 October 12, 2009

I can already hear the Patriot fans on WEEI later today:
"They should change the overtime rules!"
"It's not fair that New England never got the...

Patriots' Defense Too Much for Baltimore

 October 5, 2009

It’s nice to see Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots answer a question clearly for once.  We all stood in unison and questioned what was wrong with the Red Zone offense.  Their response: absolutely nothing. ...

Time for the Offense to Get Moving

 October 2, 2009

As the Baltimore Ravens roll into Foxboro this weekend, I can’t help but think of the week 13 match-up from 2007.  The Patriots were cruising towards 16-0 when Baltimore decided not to bow down in awe, but instead fight tooth...

Patriots' D Stifles the Falcons

 September 28, 2009

The doom and gloom that rested over Patriots’ fans all week has parted; for now.  After last week’s loss to the Jets, many fans looked ahead on the schedule and saw little relief ahead.  With the Falcons and Ravens...

Kudos to the New York Jets

First off, apologies for the late post.  A busy weekend away meant I wasn’t able to review the game tape till yesterday afternoon.  Second, before I start picking on the Patriots, let me acknowledge what the Jets did well...

The Jets' Week Two Super Bowl

So Rex Ryan and Kerry Rhodes have decided to consult the Anthony Smith guide to game preparation.  First off, Ryan’s voicemail to season ticket holders shows his ignorance.  Jets’ fans are not ignorant.  They...

The Patriots' Monday Night Miracle

After Fred Jackson scored on a ten-yard screen to put Buffalo up 24-13 with five and a half minutes left, I began writing a rough draft of a blog in which the Patriots’ lose to the underdog Bills.  Typically I try and get a...

Patriots Look to Continue Dominance Over Bills

 September 11, 2009

The New England Patriots haven’t lost to the Buffalo Bills since September 7th, 2003.  31-0.  Does that ring a bell?  That’s right, the Lawyer Milloy game.  Did emotion get the...

Big Changes in Foxboro

 September 8, 2009

The trade of Richard Seymour was a surprise.  But were you really all that shocked?  For the New England Patriots, under Bill Belichick, this is how they do business.  Circumstances may be a bit different this time, but in...

Cut Down Dates Looming

 August 28, 2009

Tonight's game against the Redskins looks to be the final audition for some players vying for roster spots. I took a quick look over the roster and saw 35 "locks." I can't imagine any of these 35 players being cut, either...

Welcome Back Tom!

It’s been another intriguing off-season in New England.  Free Agency brought in the likes of Fred Taylor, Joey Galloway, Leigh Bodden, and Shawn Springs.  We also saw the trade of Matt Cassel, and unexpectedly Mike...
