Happy Submarine Coincidence

 February 7, 2012

On a short aerial jaunt to get photos of the work at the Niantic River railroad bridge replacement project I spotted the USS New Hampshire transiting the Thames River under escort with two U.S. Coast Guard small boats and a tug.
Obviously subs are not an unusual sight around here. I've taken countless photos of subs transiting the local waters, but it's only rarely that I catch one from the air.
I quickly tapped my pilot on the shoulder, and indicating the sub off to our right passing the Hess terminal in Groton, asked if we could delay our trip to Niantic for just a moment for me to get a photo of the sub.
The photo from that pass made the front of the Region section with truly dramatic play.
On our way back to the airport after orbiting the bridge site for a while I saw the sub was just starting to accelerate into the sound headed for the Race and open sea. I once again asked my pilot to detour from our course so I could try something different.
As I said, I don't get to see submarines from the air all that often and the later afternoon light gave me a nice visual as the sub crossed the sun's glare on the water.
