What a Pain in the Foot

 April 3, 2012

With my increase in mileage came some phantom foot pain that I’ve never felt. Right underneath the balls of my ankles on both sides, I started developing some shooting pain by mile three and this lasted well after I stopped running. I’ve known for awhile that I’ve needed to purchase new sneakers as the ones I have are over a year old and have far surpassed their “mileage,” but I’d never thought that needing new sneakers would be the possible cause of such pain. The other possibility was a foot fracture, which my husband decided to scare me with as he’s heard this can happen to runners. Now, only having been a runner for a year now, I’d never realized either of these things, but obviously couldn’t ignore the pain and didn’t want to think about ceasing my running regimen. So off I went to SoundRunner in Branford to purchase a new pair of kicks. I took my first run in the new shoes at the end of last week and couldn’t believe the difference. While I still had pain, it was substantially less and I was able to walk after my run without much ado. While I don’t want to dismiss it right away, I’m hopeful all I needed was that shiny new pair of sneaks and that I can continue on my way!

Break Out the Sun

 March 27, 2012

Running in total sunlight after 5 p.m. has been literally a bright spot of my day, what with not having to avoid certain routes because of a fear of cars not seeing me or it being too remote an area. I’ve even upped my mileage to...

A Spring in My Step

 March 16, 2012

So with the clocks jumping forward came a new spring in my step this past week, with help from the incredibly mild weather we've been having. Not only has this allowed me to run at 5 p.m. when my husband...

Welcome to the Season, Winter

 March 6, 2012

I had a prediction earlier this month: that winter would decide to show up late since we haven’t had one all season. Waking up last week to three inches of snow on the ground—on a day I was supposed to run, no...

Welcome to the Season, Winter

I had a prediction earlier this month: that winter would decide to show up late since we haven’t had one all season. Waking up the last week in February to three inches of snow on the ground—on a day I was supposed to run,...

A New Venture?

 February 28, 2012

So, after enduring the stomach bug and taking almost two weeks off from running, I jumped back into it last week and couldn't believe how tough a time I had. I'd taken some time off before and although this was the longest break I've...

Flu-Like Setback

 February 15, 2012

So as I had mentioned in last week's blog, I was battling the stomach bug. Against everything I had hoped for, this bug was short-lived in nature (about 24 hours) but the days after were filled with exhaustion and my inability to get...

Change of Heart

 February 8, 2012

So in continuing to take advantage of the warm winter weather we’ve had, I completed two runs last week. The first one, I integrated some interval training and felt better this time around than the previous time I had done it...

Mixing it Up

 February 1, 2012

Last week, I finally admitted that I’ve reached my running plateau, as running three miles doesn’t make me terribly tired or feel like I’m working super hard anymore. I laugh at this because a year ago, I could barely...

What’s That White Stuff Threatening to Slow Me Down?

 January 24, 2012

The weather got progressively colder last week and using that as my excuse, I got out of my running pattern. Prior to this winter beginning, I had vowed to never run if it were to get below 40 degrees as for whatever reason, my lungs...

Bitter Breezes

 January 17, 2012

It’s no secret that the weather has been unseasonably warm this month (and I’ve taken full advantage of this by running outside every time!) so this past weekend when I ventured outside for a run and it was 34 degrees, I was...

Happy Trails

 January 12, 2012

So far, this January has been close to a dream come true weather-wise. I don’t think many can argue that 60 degrees in early January is wonderful and I spent that sunny, warm Saturday taking my workout to a different level. Happy...

Falling Into the Trap

 January 9, 2012

I am definitely guilty of falling into "the holiday trap," or using the excuse of the busy holidays to take a break from my exercise regimen. I haven’t done it on purpose, life has just gotten in the way and lately I’ve been...

Going Nowhere Fast

 December 14, 2011

As if the weather was waiting to dip below the 40-degree mark, my new treadmill made its way down to my basement last weekend just as the temperature dropped below my tolerance level.

I made a decision last spring when I...

Coming Out of the Dark

 December 8, 2011

As I've mentioned in the past, I don't run at night. I'm paranoid about several things, including being struck by a car, many of which are being operated by people in a rush and/or texting and talking on their phones.

I run...

A Week of Personal Bests

 November 30, 2011

Waking up on Thanksgiving morning, I was still unsure about whether or not I wanted to run in the Branford Rotary Y 5K. I hadn’t run a whole lot in the two weeks leading up to race day (a credit to my procrastination in joining a...

A Healthy Dose of Thankfulness

So as Thanksgiving approaches, I thought it appropriate to thank anyone and everyone who has read my blog over the last month or so. I have lots of other things to be thankful for, particularly my family, my job, and my health, to...

Sign Me Up for a Straitjacket

 November 17, 2011

Despite what I had previously thought, my days of running outside aren’t completely over in spite of the 4:40 p.m. sunset.

I managed to slip out during the late afternoon hours for a 2.5-mile jog during the week and a...

The Cold Found Me

Back in the Saddle

Fading Away

 October 26, 2011

Be it a result of a very tough three-mile race last Sunday at Hammonasset to benefit The Cove; the cold weather seeping in; or just plain laziness on my part, I took last week off from running for the first time since I started training...
