Providence College students allege off-campus hate crime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Five Providence College students are demanding action from the school after saying they were victims of an off-campus hate crime.

The five women of color say they were denied entry to a weekend party at which people yelled racial slurs and threw bottles at them.

At a rally Wednesday, supporters said similar racist incidents are commonplace at the college.

Adriel Antoine, vice president of the Providence College branch of the NAACP, called on college president, the Rev. Brian J. Shanley, "to begin this institutional change."

Shanley said college and city police are investigating.

Police confirm they responded to a party at about at 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Police say an officer asked the hosts to shut down the party and the women, according to the hosts, refused to leave.
