Nonprofit to pay back $392K to R.I. child welfare agency
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Providence nonprofit organization will pay back more than $390,000 to the Department of Children, Youth and families as part of an agreement.
WPRI-TV reports the money is part of a grant that the Center for Southeast Asians received over two years, starting in 2013.
The agreement was prompted by a state audit released last year that inspected how roughly $1 million in taxpayer money was spent during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 fiscal years.
The audit said the center failed to return nearly $434,000 in unused funds.
The department had said CSEA should repay the state for money improperly spent on meals, entertainment and meetings, as well as interest.
About $150,000 will be given back when the agreement is executed. The rest will be returned in 24 monthly installments.
