Drivers sue over Rhode Island speed cameras that issued 12,000 tickets

PROVIDENCE (AP) — Some of the thousands of drivers who received tickets from speed cameras in school zones in Rhode Island's capital city have filed a class-action lawsuit seeking to get the program thrown out.

Around 12,000 tickets were issued from just six cameras in the city of Providence in the first month of operation.

WPRI-TV reports that in a lawsuit filed Friday, lawyers for drivers say the $95 tickets they received for exceeding the speed limit by more than 11 miles per hour in a school zone were unconstitutional and issued without due process.

They're seeking class-action status and want the court to stop the city from issuing tickets under the program, as well as refund fines to those who have already paid.

A mayoral spokesperson would not comment on pending litigation.
