UPDATED: 5 hospitalized after police chase ends in highway crash

HOPKINTON, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island state police say five people have been taken to the hospital after a police chase ended with a crash on Interstate 95.

The Providence Journal reports the accident happened around 6:20 p.m. Monday night in the southern part of the state.

Police from the towns of Richmond and Hopkinton had been involved in a pursuit of a minivan that led onto Interstate 95. The chase ended when the minivan crashed at exit 1.

State police say two of the persons sent to the hospital were in serious condition as of Monday night and three had minor injuries. No police officers were injured in the chase, police told the Journal.

It's unclear what prompted the chase. State police and the Rhode Island Attorney General's office are investigating.
