Springfield police investigating shooting of teenage girl

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Police are investigating after a 15-year-old girl was shot in an apartment in Springfield's North End section.

The Springfield Republican reports officers responded to reports of a shooting at a residence on Plainfield Street around 8 p.m. Thursday.

Officers found the wounded teen, who was transported to a local hospital in serious but stable condition. Details regarding her injuries were not disclosed.

Investigators say the victim is reportedly friends with the person who shot her. They are examining the possibility that the shooting was accidental.

Police say a male juvenile fled the apartment before officers arrived. The boy is believed to be around 17 years old and may be armed with a small silver handgun.

Sgt. John Delaney says the investigation is ongoing.
