PROVIDENCE (AP) — A nonprofit that helps veterans is placing boots at Roger Williams Park in honor of U.S. service members killed in action.
Operation Stand Down Rhode Island says it's hosting the first annual "Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial" over Memorial Day weekend.
The nonprofit says it's honoring service members killed in action while defending the nation against terrorism by dedicating a boot, flag and name placard for each one.
It says nearly 7,000 boots will be displayed in the field by the Temple to Music at the park throughout the weekend.
The nonprofit collected boots across Rhode Island.
