DEM: Teen boater rescued near Newport beach was intoxicated
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says a 17-year-old rescued from waters near Bailey's Beach in Newport will face a boating under the influence charge.
The U.S. Coast Guard says crews searched for a possible person in the water on Wednesday.
Authorities say good Samaritans rescued a teenager from a drifting boat about 300 yards away from the beach at around 3:30 p.m.
Coast Guard boats and a helicopter continued searching for a second possible occupant, but officials later confirmed that the teen was alone on the water.
DEM says bystanders managed to get the boat back to shore. WPRI-TV reports that it confirmed the teen was intoxicated.
The teen was taken to Newport Hospital. His condition isn't known.
