Connecticut Sen. Murphy gets speaking slot at Democratic National Convention

Chris Murphy, Connecticut's junior U.S. senator, has been selected to speak at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia next week.

Murphy's name was on a list of more than 60 politicians released by Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and the Democratic National Convention Committee on Thursday. The time of Murphy's speaking slot was not released.

Murphy burst onto the national scene last month for his near-15 hour filibuster to push for a vote in the Senate on gun control legislation after 49 men and women were killed in an Orlando nightclub in the nation's deadliest mass shooting.

But even before the massacre at Pulse, Murphy had been an outspoken advocate for stricter gun laws. He was elected two months before the shooting deaths of 20 first-graders and six women at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown shook Connecticut and the nation.

No other Connecticut politicians were listed in the group released Thursday, but Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is expected to address the convention through his role as co-chairman of the Democratic Platform Committee.

Erica Smegielski, the daughter of principal Dawn Hochsprung, who was killed at Sandy Hook, is scheduled to speak at the convention on Wednesday night.
