Worcester man gets prison time for stealing SUV with child inside
WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A Worcester man is headed to prison after being convicted of stealing a car left running outside a store with an 8-year-old girl in the back seat.
Twenty-nine-year-old Richard McBride was sentenced to three to four years in state prison on Wednesday. A judge found him guilty of kidnapping a child under age 16 and larceny of a motor vehicle after a jury-waived trial.
Police say McBride attempted to steal the car last July while the girl's father was in the store. An officer nearby saw the incident and chased after the car.
When the officer pulled the vehicle over, police say the girl jumped out crying and ran to her father, who physically confronted McBride.
McBride's lawyer says her client was unaware the girl was in the vehicle.
