Inmate death at Somers prison under investigation

SOMERS, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut prisons officials are investigating the apparent suicide of a Shelton man serving a five-year sentence for burglary.

A Department of Correction spokeswoman says 63-year-old John Joseph Filippone was found dead in his cell on Saturday at Osborn Correctional Institute in Somers.

Spokeswoman Karen Martucci says Filippone was found with a ligature around his neck. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was sentenced in March 2014 and had been in department custody since January 2014.

The medical examiner's office says Filippone's cause of death is pending.
