Connecticut unveils new app for emergencies

HARTFORD (AP) — Connecticut has launched a new mobile app to inform residents about emergencies.

The new "CT Prepares" app incorporates text messaging, email and social networking to allow a user to communicate with friends and family members during an emergency and let them know they're safe. It can be downloaded to most smartphones.

Real-time notifications on the app including emergency news, state office closings and public safety messages will be sent directly to a user's device.

Dora Schriro, the state's commissioner of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, says downloading the new app is especially important as the height of this year's hurricane season approaches in Connecticut.

The app can be downloaded for free from iTunes Apple Store and from Google Play.
