State launches interactive website to explore rail trails

HARTFORD — The state has launched an interactive website designed to provide outdoor enthusiasts with information and maps detailing Connecticut's network of rail trails.

The CT Rail Trail Explorer includes trail maps, directions, parking information and tools that allow visitors to calculate distances between points on the trails.

There is also an option to print out a personalized map once users have settled on a route.

The site contains information and maps for the Air Line, Hop River, Moosup Valley and Larkin rail trails and a link to information about the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail.

The trails are open to hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders. They cover 88 miles and pass through the 22 towns. All trails have stone dust surfaces, except for the Farmington Canal trail, which is paved.
