Police: Charges likely against teen seriously hurt in crash

WESTERLY, R.I.  — Police in Westerly say charges are likely against a 16-year-old driver who was seriously hurt in a rollover crash that sent four other teenagers to the hospital.

The Westerly Sun reports that police say the boy had been speeding and swerving moments before the SUV crashed at an embankment on Sunday night.

Interim Police Chief Shawn Lacey said Tuesday the driver had recently received a permit but didn't have a license.

Lacey says the department would file charges once an investigation is complete and the youth is released from the hospital. The teen was listed in stable condition on Tuesday at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence.

The car's occupants, all between the ages of 14 and 16, were treated at Rhode Island hospitals after the crash and released.
