Hartford building evacuated as police deal with ax-wielding man
HARTFORD (AP) — An ax-wielding Hartford man is in custody after a standoff that led to the evacuation of a city apartment building.
Police said the 55-year old used a pick ax on the door of a neighbor's apartment and confronted police with the weapon when they responded Tuesday.
Police said the man, who they declined to identify, then retreated into his own apartment and locked the door, telling officers he had a gun and wanted to "shoot the place up."
Police evacuated the building and placed nearby Hartford High School in lockdown. Police broke into the apartment at about 10 a.m. and took the man into custody.
Police said the man appears to have a mental illness. He was sent to a local medical facility for an evaluation.
